Spooky Audiobooks for Kids

Saturday, October 9, 2021

The month of October is the perfect time for curling up in a blanket alone or with your friends and family for a spooky story. Here are some of our favorite picks for this ghostly Halloween season:

Audiobooks:

Begone the Raggedy Witches by Celine Kiernan and performed by Kate Rudd

When Mup's dad is kidnapped, she has to venture into the twisty, tangled world of the witches in her family who are not all that they may seem.

Also available in print

A Tale Dark & Grimm
by Adam Gidwitz and narrated by Johnny Heller

Hansel and Gretel, the children in the Brothers Grimm's terrible, classic tale, are already doomed when they discover a hidden cache of forbidden treats in the woods one day. One would think that they already have their hands full trying to escape the clutches of one witch who wants to cook them up in her oven. However, this is not so in A Tale Dark and Grimm where Adam Gidwitz conjures up a few extra villains from the Grimm fairy tales for Hansel and Gretel to defeat. What are poor hungry and exhausted Hansel and Gretel supposed to do now?

Also available in print, eAudiobook, and eBook

The Door by the Staircase
by Katherine Marsh with illustrations by Kelly Murphy, and read by Laural Merlington

When twelve-year-old Mary Hayes gets adopted, she is treated to a wonderful new life that's full of the cozy and yummy comforts all kids dream of. Yet, when Mary discovers the mysteries lurking among her new home, she's horrified to believe that she should have stayed in the orphanage instead.

Also available in eBook and print

Castle Hangnail by Ursula Vernon and read by Tara Sands

Wanted:

Wicked Witch

Only the vilest, meanest, creepiest witches may apply-all others will be sent to the dungeon without further notice

Posted by the Minions of Castle Hangnail...

Molly the only applicant may be a little bit more than the minions have bargained for...

Playaways (a type of portable audiobook format that just requires batteries and a pair of headphones):

Tales from the Scaremaster: Swamp Scarefest by B.A. Frade and read by Michael Crouch

Camping out on a creepy swamp at night seemed like a good idea at the time, but Aidan and Olivia, twin siblings who are always up for a scary adventure, may be a smidge too busy trying to stay alive than catching their zzzs.

The Girl in the Locked Room: A Ghost Story by Mary Downing Hahn

If you haven't already discovered Mary Downing Hahn, queen of ghost stories for kids, look no further. Curl up with this spine-tingling tale about a house haunted by a resident that it just can't seem to evict.

Also available in print and eBook
